WHO (World Health Organization) has officially announced coronavirus as a pandemic. And amid the rising cases of Covid-19 in India, there has been a surge in demand for face masks. As a result, mask sellers have started leveraging digital media to advertise safety masks.
However, Google and Facebook have started cracking down on advertising for face masks during the coronavirus pandemic.
Google bans face mask ads globally due to misleading coronavirus claims
A Google spokesperson said, “We’re committed to protecting users and surfacing helpful, authoritative information as the coronavirus situation continues to evolve. Since January, we have blocked hundreds of thousands of ads for misleading coronavirus-related products or services. Out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to temporarily ban all medical face mask ads. We’re actively monitoring the situation and will continue to take action as needed to protect users.” Read Full Story
Now, if you try advertising face masks on Google, you will see a message in your account, stating, “This candidate is not permitted to show ads in your target location.”
Rob Leathern, the director of product management, Facebook, tweeted, “We’re banning ads and commerce listings selling medical face masks. We’re monitoring COVID19 closely and will make necessary updates to our policies if we see people trying to exploit this public health emergency. We’ll start rolling out this change in the days ahead”. Read Full Story
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, tweeted, “we’re banning ads and commerce listings selling medical face masks on Instagram and Facebook. Supplies are short, prices are up, and we’re against people exploiting this public health emergency.”
As mentioned above, the primary reason for banning ads for face masks is the misleading coronavirus claims. Most of the surgical face masks are advertised as they prevent coronavirus from entering into the body.
The Ban is Temporary
Both Google and Facebook have banned ads for face masks temporarily. And, as soon as a vaccine comes up or there are equal supply and demand for masks, they’ll lift the ban. However, there is no official announcement for the same, so this is our best guess.
